Our History

Clarence W. Maberry and C. Oden Maberry established Maberry Funeral Home on the second floor of the Maberry Store in Willis, VA. in 1927. C. Oden’s leadership and commitment to the business spanned 8 decades. He never retired and was in the office working the day prior to his death.

Maberry Funeral Home was relocated in 1936 to the current Floyd location. Clarence W. Maberry died September 10th, 1955 at the age of 61. Clarence’s son, Arvie O. Maberry, who was also a licensed funeral director, became manager after his father’s death in 1955. Arvie died on March 23rd, 1960 at the age of 43.

C. Oden Maberry and his son, Carlin G. Maberry bought the funeral business on June 1st, 1960. Carlin became Manager at that time. Carlin graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in 1951. Carlin did his apprenticeship under his father C. Oden, uncle Clarence, and cousin Arvie Maberry.

Carlin used to say, “I just followed my father’s footsteps into the chosen profession.” One of the biggest changes Carlin had seen over the years were visitations being held at the funeral home instead of the homes of the deceased. At 73 years of age in 2004, Carlin said he had no regrets about his career path. Carlin had served many people in the Floyd Community as a funeral director, firefighter, and friend.

Rodney Thomas began working at the funeral home in June of 1954 after high school. He became a licensed embalmer in 1956 at the Cincinnati School of Embalming, and a licensed funeral director in 1959. Rodney retired from the funeral home in September 2003 after over 40 years of service.

In 2003, at the age of 41, Mitzi Maberry Roberson, Carlin’s daughter, trained under her father as his apprentice, and in 2005 Mitzi became a licensed funeral director and embalmer.

Carlin Maberry died on June 21, 2008. He had handled 4,030 funerals, including making arrangements with a family the day before his death.

Mitzi was a nurse at Montgomery Regional Hospital and had no intentions of following in her father’s footsteps, but after 17 years of nursing, Mitzi decided to keep up with the family tradition and follow in her father’s path. Mitzi said of Carlin, “He could outwork me and was the toughest boss I had ever had, but why not learn from the best?” Following his death, his wife Jo Ann took over as owner and president of the company. Stepping in to carry on the family tradition, Mitzi became manager in June 2008.

Today, the Maberry Funeral Home continues to provide the people of Floyd County and surrounding areas with the finest in complete funeral service at the most reasonable cost and still in the simple family home atmosphere.
